Summer programs, kept alive in down times, helping some firms now
In the recession, many firms cut summer associate programs, a choice that some say prevented them from snagging talented young lawyers to grow within the firm. This gave firms that retained their programs a competitive edge.

In 2009, less than a year after opening a Los Angeles office and in the midst of the economic downturn, Jenner & Block hosted its first summer associate program. Many viewed the move as risky. But Rick L. Richmond, a commercial litigator and managing partner of Jenner's Los Angeles office, said the program helped the firm lure and retain high quality lawyers, despite the economic hardship.
