Justices skeptical of mandatory meal breaks

The state Supreme Court on Tuesday seemed to be leaning strongly toward giving workers the flexibility to skip meal breaks. But the hotly contested Brinker case might not end in a total defense victory.

SAN FRANCISCO - The state Supreme Court on Tuesday seemed to be leaning strongly toward giving workers the flexibility to skip meal breaks if they want.


That would be a huge relief to employment defense lawyers who maintain that businesses are only obligated to provide breaks - not ensure they are taken.


But the justices also hinted at oral argument that the hotly contested case might not end...
