How immigration consequences affect a plea dependson the state

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and domestic violence victim advocates have found common ground over a shared concern that prosecutors are intentionally filing reduced charges to help defendants avoid deportation. Although some jurisdictions, including California, have interpreted the law as requiring prosecutors to do exactly that, others have not, resulting in inconsistent interpretations over the extent to which immigration consequences should factor into criminal charging decisions.
