An alternative sentencing program for teens turns 20

This year, the Los Angeles Teen Court program entered its twentieth year. Each month, 17 different high schools in the greater Los Angeles area host Teen Court for juvenile offenders.

LOS ANGELES - Omar, a 17-year-old with tattoos peeking out from his black T-shirt and baggy shorts, stands in front of two dozen or so other students at Dorsey High School, holding two pieces of paper.


He starts to read, stumbling at first, but gains momentum as he speaks of his passion for art and comic books, eliciting a few nervous giggles.
