Locally driven, medical marijuana crackdown finds success

Though critics paint the crackdown as a top-down political directive from the Obama administration, a closer look shows the program was instead a bottom-up request from local governments and law enforcement.

When California's four U.S. attorneys announced in October a coordinated crackdown on medical marijuana businesses, many observers were skeptical they could make a serious dent in the state's flourishing cannabis trade.


Instead, the federal effort drew criticism as a political maneuver and an "about face" by the White House and Justice Department officials.
