State Bar launches unit to go after the unauthorized practice of law

The State Bar will hire a lawyer and two investigators to pursue nonlawyers who provide legal services that harm consumers. It also may reintroduce vetoed legislation to expand its UPL enforcement powers.

LOS ANGELES - The State Bar is launching a new effort to go after the unauthorized practice of law.


The bar plans to set up a new unit that will investigate and shut down nonlawyers who provide legal services badly to consumers. Bar job openings for a lawyer, two investigators and an administrative staffer should be posted this week, Executive Director Joseph L. Dunn said.
