California has a long history of allowing official proponents to defend their ballot measures in court, Proposition 8 sponsors pointed out in court papers Monday.
That "well-settled practice" gives backers of the state's ban on same-sex marriage the authority to appeal a federal judge's order that the ban is unconstitutional, they argued.
