There's No 'Justice' in San Diego

After Mary Schroeder, incoming chief judge of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, was introduced as Justice Schroeder during a recent Lawyers Club luncheon, she good-naturedly cleared up any confusion. They are judges, not justices, she said, and then told a story from several years ago when a California attorney mixed up the titles during oral argument. After explaining how they were to be addressed, one 9th Circuit judge said, "There is no justice in this court."
