Bill to expand discretion in drug prosecutions clears Assembly hurdle

The Assembly Committee on Public Safety on Tuesday approved SB649, which would allow county prosecutors the discretion to charge simple possession of certain drugs, such as cocaine and heroin, as either a felony or a misdemeanor.

Advocates for drug sentencing reform in the state inched closer to a major victory on Tuesday.


The Assembly Committee on Public Safety voted 5-2 to approve SB649, a bill that would allow county prosecutors the discretion to charge simple possession of certain drugs, such as cocaine and heroin, as either a felony or a misdemeanor.
