Immigration centers in the West must screen detainees for mental illness, judge rules

It comes as a practical follow-up to a landmark permanent injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee last year that requires the federal government appoint legal representation to such detainees in deportation proceedings.

LOS ANGELES - Immigration centers in California, Arizona and Washington must screen all incoming detainees for mental illness to help determine if they are incompetent to provide their own legal counsel in deportation proceedings, according to a new order by U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee.
