Judge Relishes His Complex-Case Assignment

LOS ANGELES - Mass torts can be some of the most complicated, even confounding, cases in the civil justice system. Dozens, in some cases hundreds, of plaintiffs join forces to press their claims against defendants, who stand to lose vast sums of money. The resulting legal siege often carries on for years. Sometimes, the judge may find himself second-guessed by an appellate court to boot.
