When the last of the clearance merchandise was packed up and the lights turned off at a Mervyns in Fullerton, it left a vacant hole at the end of the Crossroads Shopping Center.

"Without the anchors, what's the big draw?" asked architect Alex Kosich. "If they [landlords] can come up with some creative uses for these major tenants [vacant space], it could work."
