Mary is driving home from work at the end of a busy day. She comes to an intersection, where the light is red. She waits for the light to change, and, when it does, she proceeds carefully into the intersection. Suddenly, she catches a glint of metal out of the corner of her eye. But there's nothing she can do as a minivan careens into the intersection against its red light, broadsiding and totaling Mary's car.
