City will argue for local control in pot case

Cities should have sweeping authority to regulate medical marijuana dispensaries, including the ability to ban the shops completely, the city of Long Beach told the state Supreme Court this week in its opening brief.

In a state Supreme Court case that could change the face of California's medical marijuana law, the city of Long Beach argues in its opening brief that cities should have sweeping authority to regulate dispensaries of the drug, including banning it.


Lawyers on all sides of the issue complain the law is vague and misunderstood, and they're looking to the high court for clarification.
