More middle market companies may file for Chapter 11

2013 saw fewer Chapter 11 filings nationwide, but lawyers say a spike in interest rates could spell trouble for middle market companies.

Fewer bankruptcy filings this year, a bull market and interest rates that continued to hover near historic lows might appear to be favorable conditions for owners of troubled businesses to keep them afloat in 2014. But companies - particularly middle market ones with significant variable-term corporate debt - may actually face increased financial pressures next year, bankruptcy lawyers say.
