9th Circuit rules corporations can't propose California ballot measures

In a unanimous reversal of an earlier 3-judge panel ruling, the appellate court dismissed arguments that the corporations have a First Amendment right to be official sponsors of state and local ballot measures.

People, not corporations or organizations, are the only ones who can officially sponsor a voter initiative in California, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday.


And in what it called a bid to protect the integrity of the electoral process, the court also held that individual sponsors must put their names on the petitions people sign to formally qualify initiatives.
