Man who pointed laser at helicopter got too tough a sentence, 9th Circuit rules

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday vacated the stiff conviction against a man sentenced to 14 years in jail after pointing a laser at a helicopter.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday vacated the stiff 14-year prison
sentence against a man who pointed a laser at a helicopter.


Arguing ignorance, Carolyn D. Phillips a sole practitioner in Fresno, convinced the
panel that Sergio Patrick Rodriguez had no idea a well-aimed laser could impair a
pilot.
