Bill aims to curb midnight prisoner releases

SB 833, introduced by Sen. Carol Liu, D-La Canada Flintridge and supported by defense attorneys and some in law enforcement, would allow sheriffs to offer inmates the option of extending their stay up to 16 hours, until daylight.

County jail inmates in California are often released in the middle of the night, when public transportation is limited and re-entry centers are closed. A bill that cleared the Senate Public Safety Committee this week aims to fix that.
