NLRB ruling on NCAA athletes could open the floodgates

Labor lawyers know the repercussions could extend far beyond unionization, even football. That's especially true here in California, where a host of employment laws might apply to college athletes if they are employees under the law.

Football fans are on their toes after an National Labor Relations Board official in Chicago said Wednesday that Northwestern University football players can unionize. Will the athletes' exercising of their right to bargain collectively disqualify teams from the National Collegiate Athletic Association and upend the multimillion dollar institution of college football, they wonder.
