SEC Settles Silicon Valley Options-Backdating Cases

The Securities and Exchange Commission settled its first two options-backdating cases against Silicon Valley companies Thursday. The settlements with Brocade Communications Systems Inc. and Mercury Interactive Inc., which has since been acquired by Hewlett-Packard Co., also should set the parameters for government negotiations with other companies that misdated option grants.
