Supreme Court Draws Line in Smoking Suit
WASHINGTON - Handing a partial victory to the business community, a divided U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday set aside a $79.5 million punitive damages award to the widow of a lifelong smoker, ruling that an Oregon jury could not punish defendant Philip Morris for harm it allegedly caused to smokers who were not party to the lawsuit.
