WASHINGTON - U.S. Supreme Court justices seemed to agree Tuesday that a federal statute used to prosecute public officials and white-collar defendants is hanging by a thread.
It appears likely that there is a majority willing to strike down the statute, which has created confusion among lower courts ever since it was passed in 1998.
