Judge hits tribe with $62 million judgment in flap over loan payments

Lawyers said the case illustrates courts' increasing reluctance to treat tribes differently than companies in business quarrels despite federal law used in the past to protect tribes from adverse decisions.

In a case lawyers said may indicate courts' increasing reticence to treat Native American tribes differently than companies in business disputes, a Riverside County judge awarded Wells Fargo Bank $62 million as the trustee in a suit brought by Saybrook Capital LLC against the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians.
