Criminal defendants who want to get out of a plea agreement by blaming their lawyer for giving bad advice must get permission from the trial court before they can appeal, the California Supreme Court ruled Monday.
The unanimous ruling, written by Chief Justice Ronald M. George, resolved a split in the appellate courts. People v. Johnson, 2009 DJDAR 16445.
