Lawyer's big class action payday on hold until dispute with creditor resolves

Plaintiffs' attorney Joseph M. Alioto will not be able to collect $28 million in attorney fees he won earlier this year in a class action until he resolves a legal dispute with a creditor, a San Francisco federal judge ordered.

SAN FRANCISCO - Plaintiffs' attorney Joseph M. Alioto thought he would get a big payday last month. A federal judge had denied a creditor's bid to nab more than $28 million in attorney fees, which Alioto won earlier this year in a class action alleging price fixing among LCD panel makers.


But on Monday, U.S. District Judge Susan Y. Illston ruled that the money was still not his.
