Prop. 8 Battle Heads to State Supreme Court

The justices will hear oral argument Thursday in their most highly anticipated case of the year, a challenge to the November voter initiative that added 14 emotionally charged words to the constitution: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

SAN FRANCISCO - A year ago, many legal observers thought the relatively conservative California Supreme Court was unlikely to take the bold step of declaring laws banning same-sex marriage unconstitutional.

Now that it has, same-sex marriage advocates are asking the justices to take an arguably more audacious stand for equal rights.
