Farmers, environmentalists attack USDA change to organic farming rule

A lawsuit alleges that the USDA shut out the public in a rule change they say weakens the organic standard by making it easier for organic farmers and processors to use synthetic substances.

A coalition of organic farmers, organic certifiers and environmentalists has sued the U.S. Department of Agriculture accusing it of eroding the integrity of the organic label by making it easier to use synthetic materials in the production and processing of organic food.
