Hidden Addiction: Lawyers Speak Out

Oakland plaintiffs' attorney J. Gary Gwilliam is lifting the veil of silence on what many say is a hidden problem among legal professionals - drug and alcohol addiction.

SAN FRANCISCO - Back in 1953, plaintiffs' attorney J. Gary Gwilliam ran with the Turks, a Seattle gang he created with about 20 other teenagers.

They drank, used heroin, got tattoos, carried weapons and stole cars.

"We thought we were the tough guys," said Gwilliam, a founding partner of Oakland's Gwilliam Ivary Chiosso Cavalli & Brewer. "We were looking for drugs and rock 'n' roll."
