Budget cuts hit smaller county courts

From Siskiyou County on the Oregon border to the deserts of the Inland Empire, trial courts are implementing mandatory furloughs, courthouse closures and - in some cases - layoffs to deal with $350 million in cuts.

While financial turmoil at the trial courts in Los Angeles and San Francisco has spurred the most dramatic staff and service cuts, the 6.8 percent reduction in funds for California's judiciary is making ripples in every corner of the state.
