On February 29, Gov. Gray Davis stated that his judicial appointments should follow his political lead on such issues as the death penalty, or they should resign . The governor's argument was that voters elected him based upon public positions in favor of capital punishment and abortion rights and his opposition to same-sex marriages, and that voters expected his appointments to follow his political views.
