High Court Rejects Interest Fees on Bad Checks

In a win for consumers during tough financial times, the California Supreme Court ruled Monday that people who write bad checks don't have to pay interest on their debt in addition to service charges prescribed by state law.

In a win for consumers during tough financial times, the California Supreme Court ruled Monday that people who write bad checks don't have to pay interest on their debt in addition to service charges prescribed by state law.

The unanimous ruling gave a boost to a federal class action accusing a debt collection company of charging consumers more than $100,000 in bogus interest charges.
