Hearings on Fee Waiver Requests Are Private

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR COLUMN

Fred Silberberg's column, "Public Access Only for Some" (Aug. 30) calling for public access to hearings on fee waiver requests, was incredibly insensitive. The judges used to just grant or deny waivers. Now with more than 12 percent unemployment, they've begun holding hearings where the poor unemployed have to come to court and beg and grovel to justify their fee waivers. I'm sure the judges don't perceive it this way, ...
