Federal, state agencies coordinate Inland Empire mortgage fraud crackdown

U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. and representatives from a host of law enforcement agencies met this week to discuss mortgage fraud in the Inland Empire and look at how each agency can coordinate efforts to combat it.

RIVERSIDE - In 2010, banks foreclosed on one in 14 homes in the Inland Empire, according to federal authorities. The phenomenon not only made the 4 million-resident region among the most impacted in the nation by the housing crisis, but also turned it into a breeding ground for mortgage fraud, said Andre Birotte Jr., U.S. attorney for California's Central District.
