Panel reverses sovereign immunity ruling

A state appellate court ruled Tuesday that Native American tribes can waive their right to sovereign immunity in commercial contracts.

A state appellate court ruled Tuesday that Native American tribes can waive their right to sovereign immunity in commercial contracts.

The ruling represented a win for the Yavapai-Apache Nation in its dispute with a San Diego tribe over $35 million in casino loans.

San Diego County Superior Court Judge Randa Trapp said sovereign immunity blocked the Yavapai-Apache Nation's lawsuit against Iipay Nation of Santa Isabel....
