Seven 9th Circuit Judges Blast Ruling Reducing Prison Term

In a blistering dissent, the judges say their colleagues showed insufficient deference to the trial judge, and published the first opinion in the circuit that reverses a sentence that was within the federal sentencing guidelines.

Last May, Chief Judge Alex Kozinski of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals demanded more authority for federal appellate courts like his to rein in trial judges who impose unreasonable sentences.
