Lawyer-Parolee Mentoring Program Falls Victim to State Budget Cuts

RIVERSIDE - A 35-year-old statewide program in which lawyers mentor parolees to steer them away from crime is close to shutting down because of state funding cuts.

VIP Mentors will lay off staff and terminate its programs statewide Dec. 3 because its main funding source, the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, suspended its contract with the organization amid the state's budget woes...
