Last week we witnessed a most unfortunate spectacle, which has taken the contentiousness in our political institutions to new lows. John Ashcroft, President George W. Bush's nominee for attorney general, has been subjected to some of the most scurrilous attacks ever waged against a cabinet nominee, by some of his former Senate colleagues and by a coalition of radical, left-wing interest groups.
