Justice Denied

During the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century, Dr. Philippe Pinel entered the newly liberated jails and hacked off the chains and shackles that had manacled individuals with mental illness. Pinel's call for the "moral treatment" of individuals overturned the dictates of the centuries-old "Malleus Maleficarum" ("The Witch Hammer"), a treatise used during the Inquisition for the diagnosis, trial and punishment of individuals with deviant behavior, who often were accused of witchcraft.
