A girl of Chickasaw descent was improperly placed in a non-Indian home, violating the federal Indian Child Welfare Act, a state appellate court ruled Thursday.
The act, which has been the subject of a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision, says local agencies must try to place American Indian children in custody proceedings with American Indian families whenever possible.
