State Senate passes bill to reduce drug sentences

If passed by the Assembly and signed into law, SB 180, which passsed the state Senate this week, would repeal a three-year sentence enhancement for prior convictions for sale, distribution, transportation, or manufacture of drugs such as cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine or PCP.

Over the objections of the California District Attorneys Association, the Los Angeles Association of Deputy District Attorneys, and several law enforcement groups, the state Senate this week passed a measure to repeal sentence enhancements for prior drug convictions.
