A San Francisco supervisors’ committee voted unanimously Monday to advance an initiative that would bar any police department in the city from utilizing facial recognition software in the course of its duties.

The vote on the Stop Secret Surveillance Ordinance initiative is the closest any city government in the country has come to limiting the specific use of facial recognition software.
