California tries to push forward rape kit bill, but expiration of federal law may cut processing funds

The expiration of a federal law on Monday is poised to impact processing times for rape kits in California, which are already backlogged.

A bill addressing California's backlog of rape kits has been awaiting approval by Gov. Gavin Newsom since mid-September, but potential cuts to funding could make the legislation challenging to implement if it were signed into law.
