Group sues US over plan to cull state’s wild horses and burros

The group takes issue with what it says is a plan to cut the herds by about four-fifths. And its complaint objects to proposals to treat mares with chemical fertility controls, conduct a “continual roundup,” and return castrated stallions back to the range.

An animal rights group is challenging a federal decision to drastically reduce a wild horse and burro herd in a remote, rugged area of Northern California.

The group takes issue with what it says is a plan to cut the herds by about four-fifths. And its complaint objects to proposals to treat mares with chemical fertility controls, conduct a "continual roundup," and return castrated stallions back to the range.
