Federal approach to prison releases during pandemic differs from state
While California state prisons and county jails free inmates before their sentences were fully served to make room for social distancing of those who remain incarcerated, Director of the Bureau of Prisons Michael Carvajal confined all federal inmates to their cells.





As state and federal prison authorities take different approaches to managing the spread of the coronavirus, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons director ordered a 14-day lockdown and a district judge said he saw no reason to release a convict into the community when there was no evidence he was virus-free.
