U.S. judge mulls reopening Samsung exploding cell battery case

The dispute concerns whether it’s too late for plaintiffs’ attorneys to resume the class action lawsuit after both sides agreed to pause it two years ago while claims were sent to arbitration.

SAN JOSE -- Attorneys representing a class of consumers suing Samsung for alleged battery defects that put some of its phones at risk of overheating and potentially exploding may have missed their chance to reopen the litigation, a federal judge in San Jose found Thursday.

"I haven't decided whether I'll allow you to," said U.S. District Judge Beth Freeman. "It's a big step to deny you that."
