LA County supervisors mull charter change to reduce law enforcement funds

If approved by voters in November, it would significantly impact an already diminished pandemic budget that cut funding from nearly every segment of government, including $145 million from the sheriff’s department and $22 million from the district attorney’s office.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors planned to decide today whether to place on the November ballot a measure that aims to permanently reallocate more than $350 million annually from the county's law enforcement agencies to fund social service programs.

The proposal, introduced as a charter amendment by Supervisors Sheila Kuehl and Hilda Solis, would earmark a minimum of 10% of the county's unrestricted general fund budget to...
