On the November day in 2018 when the deadly and destructive Camp Fire broke out, Butte County District Attorney Michael L. Ramsey was in court prosecuting a death penalty case. A deputy alerted Ramsey that the blaze had jumped into Paradise, where his pregnant daughter was at home with four small kids, refusing to leave, while her husband was away fighting the fire. "I phoned and used my best Dad voice and she got out," Ramsey said. "So it was personal."
