Prosecutors say dangerous criminals won’t be punished under public safety bill
The California District Attorneys Association has asked Gov. Gavin Newsom to veto it AB3224, arguing diversion will be sought by dangerous criminals in every eligible misdemeanor case, and failure by a defense attorney to request it would likely be considered ineffective assistance of counsel.




Prosecutors are asking Gov. Gavin Newsom to veto a bill they say would threaten public safety and impose a financial burden on the state by allowing repeat convicted drunken drivers, elder abusers and those convicted of weapons charges and hate crimes to have their cases dismissed after completing a diversion program.
