June ballot raises old concerns about contested judicial elections
A ballot notation that a candidate is the incumbent is "virtually impossible to overcome ..., even though in this case people will be voting for someone who they can't know won't be taking the seat," said Timothy D. Reuben, a civil litigator who is the managing principal and CEO of Ruben Raucher & Blum.

Two Los Angeles County judges opted to be candidates for retention in the June 7 primary even though they planned to leave the Superior Court bench very soon.
Judge Gloria L. White-Brown doesn’t appear on the ballot at all. She announced she’d retire this year, and then told a contender for her seat she was going to run anyway. The contender, Deputy District Attorney Keith T. Koyano, shifted his candidacy to an open seat.
