$35M verdict for woman who accused former track coach of sex abuse in the 1990s

Deposition testimony from former students, parents and employees described widespread, open and obvious abuse of minor girls at Pomona Unified School District by the adult male coaches, plaintiffs attorneys said.

A jury awarded $35 million to a woman who accused her former track coach at Pomona Unified School District of sexually assaulting her when she was 16, while on an overnight track trip in 1996.

The verdict reached Monday is another example of lawsuits, once not possible due to the statute of limitations, that have been filed since a state law was signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2019.
